The MPTV Grounding Monitor is a grounding tester device designed to supervise and ensure the correct grounding of vehicles or containers that load or transfer flammable and/or combustible products.
Hazmat and tankers trucks, including their hoses and hose connections, are susceptible to electrostatic charge build-up during product transfer to or from the truck's containment system. Something similar can happen when filling or emptying IBCs, vessels, railcars or mobile tanks.
This accumulation of electrostatic charge is equivalent to a hidden source of ignition. A discharge by a spark of static electricity can ignite the atmosphere in which the handling operators are working.
The safest way to work is for the operators which transfer flammable or combustible products, to ground the vehicle or container using a grounding device.
This should be done before starting any task related to the transfer operation, especially in places with the presence of flammable atmospheres.
The MPTV grounding monitor will minimize the risk of generating a spark at the moment of grounding the truck.
Operation of the MPTV Grounding Monitor
Operation:
The MPTV Grounding Monitor is designed to operate in extreme environments.
It is built on an E.P.B. (explosion-proof box) with all accessories such as the portholes or the push button for testing lamps of the same type, i.e. explosion-proof (Ex).
Once the hazmat or fuel truck is grounded by the clamp, grounding is initiated through a high impedance resistance, in order to minimize the initial discharge.
After a period of 5 seconds, the ground connection is cleared and service can then start.
The MPTV grounding monitor also has a set of auxiliary NO/NC (NA/NC Spanish) terminals that can be used to control a solenoid valve or other intervening device in the process, which will not be activated until the truck is safely grounded.
Among the functions monitored by the control system is the connection of the ground to the truck, the waiting and the start of service.
Each status is indicated by different colored lamps to avoid false readings.
The lamps are LED and have a test button that turns them all on simultaneously to check their status.
Typical uses of the MPTV Grounding Monitor device
01.
Cleaning and recovery operations for the on-site cleaning of storage tanks and chemical spills.
02.
Transport of chemicals to different production points in chemical processing plants.
03.
Transport of flammable products to external plants where the installed grounding systems do not exist or have not been verified by the supplier.
04.
Flammable material collection operations to recover flammable spills after transport and loss in containment incidents.
How do you install the MPTV Grounding Monitor device?
The installation of the Grounding Monitor (MPTV) is very simple, but since it is a system designed for flammable or dangerous environments, great care must be taken when installing it so as not to alter the degree of safety of the equipment.
The installation of the MPTV Grounding Monitor has 6 steps:
Remove the screws holding the cover.
- 116 Screws
Identify the connection terminals.
Once the front cover has been removed, the connection terminals can be seen and identified from the diagram.
A: NC contact
B: Contact NO (NA Spanish)
C: Common Contact
D and E: Power supply 100-240 VAC
Tighten the box.
The box can be fastened using the lugs at the ends.
Cable glands for connections.
The bulletproof box has 3 cable ties.
*Note: The cable glands support cables between 0.24 and 0.43 in in diameter.
- 1Electrical Power Supply
- 2Signal normal open / normal closed
- 3Grounding clamp connection
Proceed with the connections
Once the equipment has been calibrated, the power supply, signals, and the MPTV grounding clamp can be connected.
Connecting the Ground Connection
The ground connection is located on the left side of the MPTV. It has a 5/16" screw with double washer and nut. The wire connecting to the grounding javelin should have a terminal suitable for the section with a 5/16" hole and should preferably use a closed grommet.
* AVOID USING "U" TERMINALS
Connection of the MPTV Grounding Monitor
Following the graphics printed on the front of the equipment, or the diagram in the figure in step 3, connect the clamp, then the auxiliary terminals if used, and finally the power supply terminals.
Respect the phase and neutral polarity indicated in the diagram on the front.
With regard to the auxiliary terminals, it is necessary to clarify that the equipment has a set of dry contacts that will change. The status display will only be shown when the system is ready to start service, i.e. after the 5-second timeout for the initial download has elapsed.
The possible usefulness of these contacts is that they can interrupt the operation or the enabling of an electrovalve in the case the truck is not connected to the ground or the clamp is accidentally released.
Once the connections have been made and checked, the cover can be put back on.
To do this, reconnect the plug-in card, then carefully position the cover not to hit it, and put the bolts back in. Tighten the bolts and check that none are loose or missing.
IMPORTANT: Once the equipment is installed and put into operation, in case of any need of repair or revision, the box should be opened only by authorized personnel.
How does the MPTV Grounding Monitor operate?
The operation of the MPTV Grounding Monitor device is fully automatic.
Once energized, when the clamp is placed on the truck, a high-impedance discharge sequence is initiated, which lasts 5 seconds, after which the equipment enables the discharge.
The entire sequence can be followed by observing the 3 light indicators on the cover.
Red indicates that the clamp is connected. In case of a bad contact or bad connection, this light will not light up.
Yellow indicates that the high impedance discharge is taking place and its duration is 5 seconds.
Green indicates that the grounding has been done and that the discharge can be done normally.
When the MPTV enters the green condition the dry contacts change state allowing remote signalling, actuation of a solenoid valve, etc.
Operating Sequence of the MPTV Grounding Monitor
1
Connect the grounding clamp to the vehicle's mass.
2
If the connection was successful, the yellow and red light will flash at the same time.
3
After 5 seconds the red and yellow indicator will go out and the green indicator will light up.
* In time the internal auxiliary contacts will change state. [NO to NC and NC to NO (NA to NC and NC to NA Spanish)]
4
Once the unloading service has been completed, remove the clamps from the vehicle.
5
All the indicators will go out.
* The equipment will be ready to operate again and to perform a new download.
